The awareness of hygiene is important all over the world – especially since the Covid-19 pandemic changed life on the planet. The lack of knowledge about hygiene still causes many problems in the global south. Contaminated water and poor sanitation are linked to the transmission of diseases. Absent, inadequate, or inappropriately managed water and sanitation services expose individuals to preventable health risks. The Chair of Architectural Design and Participation has been contacted by Aktion Pit - Togohilfe e.V.; an association active in the health sector, school education, child aid and village development in Togo since 1980. This NGO is working closely with 10 villages and has a strong network, including doctors, medical assistants and volunteers. The task was to design a Hygiene Point for five of these villages.
TIMBOU IS LOCATED IN THE MUNICIPAL REGION OF LES SAVANES, TOGO, 624KM NORTH OF THE CAPITAL.WE FIND A LARGE VILLAGE, BOTH IN DEMOGRAPHICS AND COVERED AREA: 18.000 INHABITANTS, MAKING IT THE MOST POPULATED OF THE TEN AIMES AFRIQUE MODEL VILLAGES. THE FIRST IMPRESSION ALREADY CHARACTERISES TIMBOU: ONE ARRIVES AND DOES NOT NOTICE BECAUSE THE VILLAGE IS A PATCHWORK OF DIFFERENT NEIGHBORHOODS DISSECTED BY THE NATIONAL ROUTE N1, RIVER BEDS AND AGRICULTURAL STRIPS. THE POLYCENTRAL GROWTH RESULTS IN A VAST AREA COVERED BY THE VILLAGE AND NO CLEAR BOUNDARIES TO IT. THE PEOPLE SUSTAIN THEMSELVES IN AGRICULTURE. SURPLUS IS SOLD AT THE MARKET. DUE TO ITS EXTREME POVERTY, SANITARY STANDARDS AND DRINKING WATER AVAILABILITY ARE VERY LOW. THERE IS A SUBSTANTIAL LACK OF MEDICAL CENTRES, PROFEESSIONALS AND HEALTH EDUCATION. BEFORE EVERYTHING ELSE, THESE BASIC NEEDS NEED TO BE TAKEN CARE OF, WHICH IS OUR PRIORITY: HYGIENE AND HEALTH THROUGH COMMUNITY. BASED ON THE PEOPLE‘S NEEDS AND THE LOCAL POTENTIAL, THE INTERVENTION JOINS HYGIENE AND COMMUNITY ELEMENTS TO FORM A NEW SYNERGETIC NODE ENHANCING THE EXISTING COMMUNITY NETWORK. IT TURNS CONSTANT CHALLENGES INTO EVERYDAY BENEFITS BY USING SIMPLE AND COST EFFICIENT METHODS. VALUING LOCAL DEFINITIONS AND TRADITIONS YET NIMBLY FORMING CREATIVE SYNERGIES AND NEW BONDS BETWEEN THE PEOPLE‘S PASSIONS, LIFESTYLES AND VALUES CREATES AN IMPACT THROUGHOUT ALL SCALES OF COMMUNITY. HYGIENE IS ESTABLISHED BY PROCESSES BECOMING HABITS, BEING INTEGRATED INTO AN EVERYDAY ROUTINE.
