OTHER CITY

After the Second World War, „concrete cubes“ quickly occupied the housing market with their low cost and high practicality. However, in the modern context of individualism, architecture has to be more distinctive rather than just a machine for living in.

In this case, our site is an abandoned zone located on the west side of the Olympic Park. In 1972, the Olympic Games were held in Munich and people from all over the world used the S-Bahn station Olympiastadion to get to the Olympic Park. Over the next few decades, the station and its surrounding area were gradually abandoned by the city‘s transport network. Overgrown with weeds, it became a playground for hippies and homeless people.

Now, the abandoned site will be given a new life by several creative strategies: residential buildings will be built on the railway tracks to alleviate housing shortages in Munich. Artists, students and young families will be the first to experiment in the buildings. Here, people are no longer homogeneous individuals. The mixed social structure and common space provide people with more possibilities of communication, understanding and kindness.
